Wonthaggi Life Saving Club

Wonthaggi Life Saving Club is a family-based volunteer organisation that has been providing an aquatic rescue service to the Cape Paterson Bay Beach and surrounding community for 85 years. Our lifesavers complete patrols, run school education programs, and participate in lifesaving competitions If you have a child between 5 and 13 (at midnight on 30/09/2023) that enjoys the beach and is keen to learn new skills, then our Nipper program is a great way for them to do that. The vision for our Nipper Program is to provide a safe and friendly environment where both nippers and parents can learn and enhance their knowledge about surf life saving and water safety.  The main aims of the nipper program is to: Develop surf awareness Increase confidence and skills in beach relatedactivities Offer training to those wanting to pursue competitionor awards Instil and re-enforce sun smart philosophies Encourage enjoyable and healthy participation Progress members towards surf rescue awards  Promote a positive non-threatening environment Meet new friends Come and join us and have some fun for more information please feel free to contact us at junior.activities@wlsc.org.au

HOY is like BINGO with cards but to win a player needs to match all of their playing cards to the cards the dealer turns over.  Our HOY events are a hit for family nights down in our club hall with novelty and door prizes and all for the cost of $5 For 2 hours of entertainment. This is our yearly Bronze Camp to train members in their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) and Bronze Medallion (BM) qualifications.  Information about the awards is as follows: Surf Rescue Certificate The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) provides participants basic patrolling and surf awareness knowledge, enabling participation in basic lifesaving patrol activities. The award trains candidates in signals, radio operations, resuscitation, surf awareness, and rescue skills. Candidates will also complete a 100m run - 100m swim - 100m run in 5 minutes or less on the assessment day. The SRC course is attended for a total of 21.5 hours including assessment. Prerequisites Minimum 13 years old (on the day of the final assessment) Able to swim 200m in 5 minutes Bronze Medallion The Bronze Medallion (BM) provides participants basic patrolling and surf awareness knowledge, enabling participation in lifesaving patrolling operations. The award trains candidates in the skills of signals, radio operations, resuscitation, surf awareness, surf skill, rescue skills, emergency care, spinal management and on-the-job patrol training. Candidates will also complete a 200m run - 200m swim - 200m run in 8 minutes or less on the assessment day. The BM course is attended for a total of 39.25 hours including assessment. Prerequisites Minimum 15 years old (on the day of the final assessment) Able to swim 400m in 9 mins Please review the SRC & BM 2023 Course Guide for all the details and sign-up links (on the last page).  Spots will fill up fast for this highly sought-after course at Cape Paterson Bay Beach! SRC/BM Course Sunday 14th  January - Friday 19th January Course costs include payment for patrol uniform,  course workbooks and resources, assessment fee, club facilities and catering. Residential Course Cost Candidates have the choice to stay in our club bunkrooms for the duration of the course (Monday-Saturday) with breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner included. Cost: $180 Non-Residential Course Cost Candidates who do not wish to stay in the club bunkrooms have the option of paying non-residential course costs and will include morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Cost: $ 130 $20 Discount offered for every additional family member that undertakes this course.
