Wonthaggi Life Saving Club is a family-based volunteer organisation that has been providing an aquatic rescue service to the Cape Paterson Bay Beach and surrounding community for 85 years. Our lifesavers complete patrols, run school education programs, and participate in lifesaving competitions If you have a child between 5 and 13 (at midnight on 30/09/2023) that enjoys the beach and is keen to learn new skills, then our Nipper program is a great way for them to do that. What is Skills Maintenance?  Lifesaving clubs are responsible for ensuring members maintain their skills to the minimum standard set by SLSA. The guiding principle for skills maintenance is that lifesaving clubs can meet their service level agreements with confidence in members' lifesaving skills and abilities.   All active lifesavers are required to complete a skills maintenance assessment to show currency in the life saving award/s they hold under the supervision of a Traner, Assessor or Facilitator (TAF).   Skills maintenance assessments are necessary to:  Ensure ongoing proficiency of members in their area of training and activities. Maintain the standards of knowledge and expertise of lifesavers.  Satisfy legal and statutory requirements. Reinforce and maintain our service commitment to the beach-going community. All members who wish to undertake patrol duties or compete in competitions at a State or National level must undertake annual skills maintenance activities to maintain proficiency. What does Skills Maintenance cover? Skills maintenance includes practical assessment activities and (for select awards) an online learning/theory component. Skills Maintenance is in place for the awards listed below and should be completed annually unless stated otherwise.   Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)  Bronze Medallion (BM) Radio Operator Certificate (ROC) First Aid & Emergency Care Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART)* Powercraft Side-by-Side Vehicle (SSV)   Inflatable Rescue Boat Crew (IRBC) Inflatable Rescue Boat Driver (IRBD) Y Y & License check Maintenance of ART award only. Does not lead to the issuance or extension of CPR/ART units of competency.  For more information check out the Skills Maintenance Guide All online theory  must be completed prior attending practical sessions  A summary of the skills maintenance process is provided below:  A)  Book into the selected skills maintenance session through the member training portal B)  Receive a confirmation email and check all details are accurate.  C)  Access and complete the online learning / theory test in the member training portal (ifapplicable) D)  Attend the face-to-face session/s. E)  Get your skills maintenance card signed off by an endorsed TAF, or Sign the Skills Maintenance App G)  Provide your completed card to the skills maintenance session Coordinator.  If successful - Monitor Surfguard for updated training records If unsuccessful - Book another practical session and resit the outstanding assessment item/s

Age Managers are responsible for developing our nippers into future lifesavers and providing a supportive environment where they can learn. Age Manager courses are available, which educate parents and volunteers on lifesaving and how to instruct nipper activities on the beach and in the water. Parents don’t require a lifesaving background to be an age manager. Course outcomes:  By the end of the course and successful completion of the practical requirements, you will be able to: understand the roles and responsibilities of the age manager and the age manager mentor develop strategies to work with children, parents and guardians, coaches, officials and club administrators manage risks in the beach environment • cater for the physical, emotional and social development of Nippers in your care safely deliver lesson plans • emphasise fun and participation through educational games and engaging activities utilise a range of communication, teaching and behaviour management strategies to help Nippers learn basic skills. To become a qualified SLS age manager, you must: be a minimum of 18 years old (Victorian Requirement) have completed the relevant state/territory legislation check(s) for working with children have completed the online Safeguarding Children and Young People awareness course be a financial member of a club. Working bee from 10am. Dust off the winter cobwebs, and be ready for the start of the season. Lunch provided for those present.  Followed by the Annual General Meeting - an official reflection of the previous year, plans for the upcoming year and election of our Executive Committee Office Bearers, at 1.30pm Online will also be available.

A FREE FUN KIDS ACTIVITY DAY A fun filled day loaded with things to do and enjoy Open for all kids 5-10 years of age. 10.00am to 2.30pm  (Tuesday 1st  October 2024) The Program is designed to ensure children have fun while participating in lessons that will allow them to enjoy the beach safely. Activities have been designed where the emphasis is on fun and education, regardless of development stages, and are presented in an easy-to-follow manner, by trained volunteers, Activities will include drawing colouring as well as lifesaving group activity games, to ensure experiences are positive, no anti-social behaviour will be tolerated so bring a smile and be prepared to join in and have fun Beach and outdoor activities will be weather dependant and the program has been designed to cater for this.  Food and drink is supplied food allergies will be considered but may not be able to be catered for. Please note that photos of your child may be taken and used in promotional material both print and social media throughout this activity.
